Desperate Duchesses (Desperate Duchesses #1 )By Eloisa James

Desperate Duchesses
Desperate Duchesses #1
Eloisa James

Synopsis from Goodreads:

"Welcome to a world of reckless sensuality and glittering sophistication...of dangerously handsome gentlemen and young ladies longing to gain a title . . . of games played for high stakes, including--on occasion--a lady's virtue."

A marquess's sheltered only daughter, Lady Roberta St. Giles falls in love with a man she glimpses across a crowded ballroom: a duke, a game player of consummate skill, a notorious rakehell who shows no interest in marriage--until he lays eyes on Roberta.

Yet the Earl of Gryffyn knows too well that the price required to gain a coronet is often too high. Damon Reeve, the earl, is determined to protect the exquisite Roberta from chasing after the wrong destiny.

Can Damon entice her into a high-stakes game of his own, even if his heart is likely to be lost in the venture?

My review
3/5

I think I like Eloisa James Fairy Tale series better.

This one had a cute story and some witty banter. I liked the characters and how chess was all the rage.

Roberta was kind of ehh, but she had her moments where I found her to be funny.

Adored the Early of Gryffyn he was well written and he and his son where very entertaining.

I think I enjoyed Jemma and Elijah more than the other characters and I want to know how their story plays out.

I think the book seemed to do well in setting up the characters for the rest of the series.

Cute story, there were points where I felt I had to push myself to continue but it was worth the read and it seems to have set up the series nicely by introducing some intriguing characters that I’d like to read more about. I’m looking forward to continuing this series especially when I get to Jemma and Elijah’s story.

Scorched ( Frigid #2 )by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Scorched

Frigid #2
by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis from goodreads:

Sometimes life leaves a mark…

Most days, Andrea doesn’t know whether she wants to kiss Tanner or punch him in the gut. He is seriously hot, with legit bedroom eyes and that firefighter body of his, but he’s a major player, and they can’t get along for more than a handful of minutes. Until now.

Tanner knows he and Andrea have had an epic love/hate relationship for as long as he can remember, but he wants more love than hate from her. He wants her. Now. Tomorrow. But the more he gets to know her, the more it becomes obvious that Andrea has a problem. She’s teetering on the edge and every time he tries to catch her, she slips through his fingers.

Andrea’s life is spiraling out of control, and it doesn’t matter that Tanner wants to save her, because when everything falls apart and she’s speeding toward rock bottom, only she can save herself.

Sometimes life makes you work for that happily ever after…

My Review
5/5

I’m a huge fan of Jennifer L Armentrout’s books, so I maybe a little biased.

I’ve already enjoyed the glimpse of Tanner and Andrea’s love/hate relationship in Frigid so I was excited that Scorched was their story.

Andrea is strong, determined and fun woman, but she has her issues. Drinking being one of them. Tanner does not like how much Andrea drinks and he finds himself more and more attracted to her especially when she’s sober.

Tanner is a cocky, fun and protective guy. Albeit somewhat of a man whore…or at least he was and Andrea thinks he is. These two clash like crazy but you can even feel the sexual tension between them when they are arguing. And when Tanner finally starts showing how much he cares for Andrea its up to Andrea to finally care enough about herself to let him love her.

So as much as I love reading about Tanner and Andrea’s story. I think the best part was Andrea’s story. The author wrote her and her problems so well that my heart hurt for Andrea. And of course when she started taking control of her life I wanted to cheer. The problems Andrea dealt were very well written and honestly I think many can relate to.

Wonderful, emotional, heartfelt story with humor, steamy scenes, learning to love oneself and accepting love and help from others.

The Shadow Revolution (Crown & Key #1) by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith

The Shadow Revolution
Crown & Key #1
by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith

Synopsis from Goodreads:

A thrilling new Victorian-era urban fantasy for fans of Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles, the Showtime series Penny Dreadful, and the Sherlock Holmes movies featuring Robert Downey, Jr.

They are the realm’s last, best defense against supernatural evil. But they’re going to need a lot more silver.

As fog descends, obscuring the gas lamps of Victorian London, werewolves prowl the shadows of back alleys. But they have infiltrated the inner circles of upper-crust society as well. Only a handful of specially gifted practitioners are equipped to battle the beasts. Among them are the roguish Simon Archer, who conceals his powers as a spell-casting scribe behind the smooth veneer of a dashing playboy; his layabout mentor, Nick Barker, who prefers a good pub to thrilling heroics; and the self-possessed alchemist Kate Anstruther, who is equally at home in a ballroom as she is on a battlefield.

After a lycanthrope targets Kate’s vulnerable younger sister, the three join forces with fierce Scottish monster-hunter Malcolm MacFarlane—but quickly discover they’re dealing with a threat far greater than anything they ever imagined.

My Review:
5/5

I loved it! Absolutely LOVED this book and I’m extremely excited that there is more books coming in this series!

Action packed, alchemy, magic, steampunk, mystery, thriller of a story. With nightmare inducing bad guys.

I can’t think of anything I didn’t like about this book. You have Simon who is a spell casting scribe and possibly something more. His mentor Nick who has helped simon with his magic and Nick himself is a jack of all trades of magic. Malcolm a Scottish monster hunter who uses kick a** weaponry that he gets from Penny ( she makes some of the coolest weapons). Then there is Kate an alchemist who seems to have an amazing knowledge of herbs and mixing them to use as weapons.

The story was fast paced full of action, humor, mystery, magic, steampunk and everything you could possibly want in a Urban fantasy steampunk book.

Visions of Heat Psy- Changeling #2 by Nalini Singh

Visions of Heat
Psy- Changeling #2
Nalini Singh

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Hailed as a major new talent in paranormal romance, Nalini Singh takes us deeper into the world of the Psy and the changelings in her latest extraordinary novel, where a gifted woman sees passion in her future - a passion that is absolutely forbidden by her kind...

Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly sought after ability to predict the future. Then the visions show her something even more dangerous - aching need...exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she yearns to embrace could be the end of her.

Changeling Vaughn D'Angelo can take the form of either man or jaguar, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly drawn to Faith. The jaguar's instinct is to claim this woman it finds so utterly fascinating and the man has no argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who need Faith's sight for their own purposes. They must keep her silenced - and keep her from Vaughn.

My review
3/5 Stars

Good continuation from the first book.

Faith has the ability to predict the future. When she sees something extremely disturbing she sneaks away from the compound in which she is being held to get help from Sacha.

Vaughn has a thing for the red headed F-Psy and so does his jaguar side. I thought Vaughn was pretty kick a**. And at times funny.

The story was interesting and suspenseful. There was action, romance and steamy scenes.

I just felt there was something off with this book. Its not a bad book and the characters are well done and good characters. I think I was just expecting more since I gave the 1st book 4 stars. But I will be continuing the series and I hope it gets better from here.

Sonora and the Eye of the Titans ( Sonora #1) by Travis Hall

Sonora and the Eye of the Titans

 Sonora #1

By Travis Hall

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Percy Jackson meets I Am Number Four in this epic young adult fantasy series that answers the question, what if the gods of ancient civilizations were merely aliens?

Thousands of years ago, human civilizations were slaves to gods & titans. In truth, these beings were aliens from a world called Sonora. A war broke out that ended their rule on humanity, led by the famously known, so-called gods of ancient civilizations. Victorious, the gods of Earth established an order of Guardians, tasked to defend humans against the unauthorized passage of Sonorian invaders.

Many years later, the balance of power shifts, and the King of Sonora is murdered by a malevolent General who seeks ultimate power. As this new King’s power grows, evil forces takeover in Sonora, and eventually push that world toward the brink of war. The Guardians of Earth are now at a precipice, and their only hope is to protect the Sonorian rebellion and hope that they can find a way to defeat this new King before he amasses an army large enough to invade Earth.

Sasquatch, one of the most famous Guardians, monitors the gateway in North America where a group of Sonorian rebels have assimilated into the small mountain community of Sandy, Oregon. His task becomes even more complicated when he learns that he must protect the last bloodline of the rightful heir to the Sonorian throne.

Allora is unaware of her alien and royal heritage until she becomes the victim of a malicious prank. Embarrassed in front of her peers, her emotions become overwhelming, causing her hands to burst into flames. The sudden and public outburst projects an energy signature that attracts assassins to the small town.

Allora and her friends Tanner, Dax, and Katie must learn the ways of combat, master the art of the sword, and harness the ability to focus energized molecules, called hadrons, in order to meet their destiny and become true Sonorian warriors. Their only hope for survival is an ancient artifact, known as the Eye of the Titans.

To find it, Allora, Katie, Dax, and Tanner must solve complex riddles, fight mythical creatures, and navigate a magical cavern maze, all the while enduring advanced calculus, jealous cheerleading girlfriends, and the much anticipated prom.

My Review
2.5/5 Stars

So this book.. What to say…… I liked the concept and the Synopsis grabbed me…

As for the story itself it had me on a roller coaster of do I want to continue reading it or just give it up.

It started slow. Typical high school kids dealing with high school stuff than when the action started and we met Sas and found out what the kids were I was totally digging it. Then as I kept reading the story got bad again. Boring, the kids were annoying. I think Allora’s character at times was a complete contradiction from her character she portrayed at other times. Some of the things they said and did made me cringe. Maybe high school kids are like that these days. I don’t know.

Now it wasn’t all bad. There were spurts of action that I actually liked and scenes flow of the story and dialogue that didn’t seem so forced or awkward. And those were really great parts.

I really like the idea behind this story and I will read the next one in the series because I won it in a giveaway and I’m hoping it gets better because there is a lot of promise with the whole Ancient race from like another dimension influencing Earth Mythology. It has adventure, mythology, Sasquatch and some action.

I’m not sure who I would recommend it to. Maybe, those who like YA like Percy Jackson could give it try. Like I said the story is a great idea but sometimes the first book in the series seems to fall flat for me.

The Shadows ( Black Dagger Brotherhood #13) by J.R Ward

The Shadows

( Black Dagger Brotherhood #13)
by J.R Ward

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on... except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around... but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice..

My Review
2/5

It was okay

Lets start with the main story Trez and Serena, sweet sad and emotion filled although kind of bland. Ups and downs because of their predicament but I guess I was expecting a different ending to it. I did enjoy Trez and iAm’s connection and love for each other and the length iAm would go to protect his brother. That was sweet.

I think I enjoyed iAms part of the story more than Trez and Serena’s. His part was more of a mystery and had some excitement to it.

Xcor and Layla still play a good part in the story which I’m not sure how I feel about whats going on with that relationship. I am intrigued and wondering if Xcors group will somehow join ranks with the BDB.

Rage is going crazy. I don’t even know what to say about that. He just keeps popping up in the story with these anxiety attacks or something. I found it kind of taking away from the story. I mean maybe it’ll go somewhere in the next books so we know whats going on but in this story he’s just going crazy missing his woman.

All in all.. I didn’t get into this one as much as I did the others. The story was good. The action seemed more minimal. I am interested in what is going to happen with Paradise and if anymore females try out to become a part of the BlackDagger Brotherhood. iAm’s and Trez’s past is interesting along with what was going down in the S’Hsibe.

It held my interest although it was a struggle at points but its part of a series I started and really liked so I feel the need to keep with it and see it through. So, this one maybe was sort of a miss with me. I liked the Shadow brothers but not so much the story.

Nash (Marked Men #4) by Jay Crownover

Nash
Marked Men #4
by Jay Crownover

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Will their past determine their future?

Saint Ford has worked hard to achieve her childhood dream of becoming of nurse. Focused on her work and devoted to her patients, there’s no room for love. She doesn’t need a guy making waves in her calm, serene life—especially when he’s the unforgettable hottie who nearly destroyed her in high school. Dark, brooding Nash Donovan might not remember her or the terrible pain he caused. But he turned her world upside down... and now he’s trying to do it again.

Saint has no idea that Nash isn’t the cocky player he once was. Uncovering a devastating family secret has rocked his world, and now he’s struggling to figure out his future. He can’t be distracted by the pretty nurse he seems to meet everywhere. Still, he can’t ignore the sparks that fly between them —or how she seems so desperate to get away from him. But the funny, sweet, and drop-dead gorgeous Saint is far too amazing to give up on—especially since she’s the only thing in his life that seems to make sense.

When Nash discovers the truth about their past, he realizes he may have lost her heart before he could even fight for it. Now, Saint has to decide: is Nash worth risking herself for all over again?

My Review
5/5 Stars

Every time I pick up a the next book in the Mark Men series I swear they keep getting better.

Saint Ford was picked on and made fun of in high school. Except when Nash started talking to her he was nice to her and made her smile. One day Nash broke her heart pretty much shattered it by say something she perceived was about her.

Nash in high school was what most typical guys in high school were like even though he was nice he also liked the female persuasion a lot and sometimes didn’t notice what was going on in front of him. Especially if his own self confidence ( not thinking he is smart enough) gets in the way of noticing how much the shy girl likes him.

Nash runs into Saint Ford years later after Saint goes to school to become a nurse and Rome ends up being emitted into the hospital she works at. Then later his Uncle Phil is emitted into the same hospital and Saint being true to her name helps Nash through his problems even though she swears she isn’t going to get hung up on him or be nice to him because of what happened in high school.

Saint really has some self esteem issues when it comes to guys and also some trust issues due to what is going on with her mom and father and the fact she is trying to help her mother get over what her father has done. She really doesn’t want to be attracted to Nash but Saint being Saint is caring and sweet and can’t stand seeing Nash suffer even if she can’t get over what happened in high school. Nash adores Saint he finds her sweet, beautiful, smart and kind and he has the patience to show Saint just what he thinks of her and to show her he likes everything about her. Even when Saint runs Nash patiently waits. Until the last misunderstanding in which Saint not only hurts he relationship with Nash but a new friendship with the woman across the hall from him that needs a friend.

Wonderful book! I think this book brought up some great issues like dealing with self confidence, misunderstandings, forgiveness, family, loss, acceptance and trust issues.

Marcus: Hell Squad Hell Squad #1 by Anna Hackett

Marcus: Hell Squad

Hell Squad #1
by Anna Hackett

Synopsis from Goodreads

In the aftermath of a deadly alien invasion, a band of survivors fights on…

In a world gone to hell, Elle Milton—once the darling of the Sydney social scene—has carved a role for herself as the communications officer for the toughest commando team fighting for humanity’s survival—Hell Squad. It’s her chance to make a difference and make up for horrible past mistakes…despite the fact that its battle-hardened commander never wanted her on his team.

When Hell Squad is tasked with destroying a strategic alien facility, Elle knows they need her skills in the field. But first she must go head to head with Marcus Steele and convince him she won’t be a liability.

Marcus Steele is a warrior through and through. He fights to protect the innocent and give the human race a chance to survive. And that includes the beautiful, gutsy Elle who twists him up inside with a single look. The last thing he wants is to take her into a warzone, but soon they are thrown together battling both the alien invaders and their overwhelming attraction. And Marcus will learn just how much he’ll sacrifice to keep her safe.

My Review:
3/5 Stars

Coming in at less than 150 pages this was a quick sci fi action romance read.

This story packed lots of great action of military fighters fighting crazy dinosaur type aliens. A she likes him, he likes her but doesn’t tell type romance. Steamy scenes and great humor.

This story was just a fun read. Elle is the groups eyes while they are out fighting. Marcus is the groups leader. Elle finally gets to help out Hell Squad on the ground but Marcus doesn’t want her to get hurt. She isn’t trained for this stuff. Once Elle and Marcus are thrown together we get to see their attraction for each other hit head on. Also we get to see Elle become a bad a** female soldier. One who will do her job even if it puts her in harms way.

You got your action, sci fi, romance, humor and steamy parts. Plus its a short read that keeps you entertained to the end and (at least for me) looking forward to the next in the series.

Give the Devil His Due ( Days of New #5) by Meg Collett

Give the Devil His Due
Days of New #5
by Meg Collett

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Set in the same world as Meg Collett’s bestselling End of Days series comes the darkly comedic paranormal serial spin-off series, Days of New.

A girl who doesn’t believe in angels. A devil who doesn’t believe in himself. She has one week to save his soul or another war will break out, and no one will survive this one.

My Review
5/5

Of course I LOVED this. It’s an ending to a fabulous series!

This book gives us more Maya and Lucifer. He loves her you can tell and we get to watch as Maya comes to love the Devil to when she figures out what her power as a nephilim may be.

I like how Maya tried to make Lucifer not such a jerk and to acknowledge that maybe someone (s) are affecting the way he is acting. We come to get to know the demon as maybe not actually evil creatures but ones with feelings and individual personalities and yes I adored Dante the demon who Maya befriended and who helped her figure out what was going on in Lucifers home.

Clark, Cami, Michaela and Gabriel are back. Gabriel wants to fight Lucifer for what happened with Zachriel. Cami and Clark thing Gabriel and his army are wrong and that it wouldn’t end well.

Can Maya convince Lucifer not to fight and to seek another conclusion or are those that are whispering in his ear going to be more convincing? Will Maya survive when those who want her dead come after her? Will it be her death that spurns another war?

I loved the ending I found it rather bittersweet. This book still had action, humor and Clark’s attitude was back. Great way to wrap up a series with a wonderful ending.

Rant by Chuck Palahniuk

Rant

Chuck Palahniuk

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Buster “Rant” Casey just may be the most efficient serial killer of our time. A high school rebel, Rant Casey escapes from his small town home for the big city where he becomes the leader of an urban demolition derby called Party Crashing. Rant Casey will die a spectacular highway death, after which his friends gather the testimony needed to build an oral history of his short, violent life

My Review
4/5 Stars

I love how when I’m done reading one of this authors books my first thought is usually. What the F*ck did I just read? I mean seriously I have no idea how I was so captivated by this book. It was rather disgusting, but there was so much interesting stuff going on I probably should have gave it less stars honestly. mind f*ck of a book to me, but I like how it was written. How it was all interviews or testimonies from so many different characters and how it all came together to tell the story of Rant Casey.

Rant is rather disgusting character, but I had to know how he died. This isn’t one of those books that I feel like I could “ connect” with the main character. Shoot, I wouldn’t want to “connect” with Rant. I would want to stay far away from his rabid craziness. But! he made such an interesting character. So overly gross and weird that I cringed reading things he did. It didn’t stop me from reading and finishing this weird a** book though. The ending…omg the ending WHAT THE F*CK.

I’m not sure who I’d recommend this to. I mean maybe if you’re a die hard fan of this author you’d probably like this book. But it was rather overly disgusting. I can’t remember if Damned or Choke was this gross. Those are the only other books I’ve read by Chuck Palahniuk. Such a crazy trip with this book. When you piece things together I think you just come out with WTF. ( At least in my opinion)

Gross yet interesting, loved the way it was written.

Rachel’s Folly by Monica Bruno

Rachel’s Folly
Monica Bruno

Synopsis from Goodreads

Rachel Richards’ ideal life is about to come undone. It’s the week of Rachel’s best friend’s wedding. Her fiancĂ© is a mysterious man named Jack, who seems to have no family or friends. After a night of drinking goes awry, Rachel is forced to face a dark part of herself she didn’t know existed. What started as a horrible mistake turns into a suspenseful mystery as pieces of Jack’s past start falling into place, and Rachel’s life hangs in the balance. Told from three unique perspectives—a heroine, a brother, and a vigilante—and set against the backdrop of Austin, Texas, Rachel’s Folly is a suspenseful thriller that explores profound loss, morality, and the lengths to which we will go to keep our darkest secrets

My Review

4/5

I got this for my honest review.

Interesting, quick, mysterious read taken from 3 view points.

First we get Rachels story. Its rather heart wrenching as she makes a mistake and we get to read how keeping it a secret takes a toll on her. When Rachel is starting to unravel who exactly Jack is her story comes to an end and we pick up with her brother putting the pieces together and figuring out what actually happened to Rachel. As Ben ( the brother) starts unravelling the clues and meets another character Sara ( who happens to be a patient of Rachel’s) something happens to him which puts his life at risk. Finally we switch to Sara’s point of view. Who ends up being the closer. The one to put Jack in his place ( so to speak) .

This one man and this mistake affected so many lives in this story and it was interesting ( at least to me) to see not only how the main characters were affected but also everyone around them. From Rachel’s relationship with her husband ,her son and her best friend. To Ben and his relationship with his mother.

Such a sad heart wrenching mysterious story. It drew me in a kept a hold of me because I wanted to know how it all tied together and ended. It was a quick read ( at least for me)

Looking forward to reading the next installment of this series.

Being holed up in her apartment is a bad, bad idea. Can Gray control the fire that Thane seems to light inside her, or will she give in to her deepest desires. Can Thane achieve his goal without hurting Gray in the process?

The stakes are impossibly high, but love and lies don't play nice with each other. Will Gray's past catch up with her first? Or will Thane's own secrets explode and tear them apart?

My Review

3/5 Stars

This book starts while Gray is on the run and there are people following her and watching her. As she goes to her destination you get the backstory as the story moves forwards. Sometimes in memories sometimes just by what she says.

Beautiful Collisions is written in Thane’s and Gray’s P.O.V. While sometimes dual points of view tend to be a little confusing I thought the author did a good job on keeping it from being confusing and making their points of view interesting to read. I did find the flashback parts confusing at times.

I found Thane to be kind of interesting. At least more interesting than Gray. There was the whole mystery as to why he was watching Gray and what exactly his intentions were. At the end you get the reason why he is so invested in Gray.

When Thane and Gray meet each other and Gray ends up having to take care of Thane there was some interesting banter between them and they were kind of cute together. I just wonder how long Gray and Thane are going to keep their secrets from each other

So, Okay the characters were decent. The story was okay, a little slow but still kind of interesting. I found myself bored at some parts but I think things started picking up towards the end of the book, but by that time we get to the cliffhanger ending. I wouldn’t say not to read this book. It deals with some interesting issues and like I said the characters are decent and their were points were the story grabbed my attention and held it. I will be picking up the next book because I’m interested in seeing what happens between Thane and Gray and I really want to know how it ends.
